Teach it

October 25, 2010

Sorry, no snappy title today.

I recently found myself explaining to a colleague how and why we would approach a certain problem. It was a problem with considerable ambiguity and though I had thought about it prior to this colleague asking me for an explanation, I hadn’t really arrived at a firm point of view. But in the midst of my explanation, I had the sensation of understanding. That is, my own act of explanation to another helped me understand my own thinking.

This isn’t rocket science. If that’s what you want, go here. This is just a small thought and that’s OK with me. If you find yourself struggling to make sense of an issue or challenge, force yourself to explain it to a colleague. It might help surface some latent perspective or clarity that you had all along.
