It’s supposed to hurt

May 7, 2010

You can go through life doing what you’re good at and choosing situations in which you know you’ll shine. The benefit of that approach is that nobody will ever tell you that you suck. You’ll never have that experience where you’re in the midst of doing something and you’re unsure of whether you’ll be able to pull it off.

But you’ll never grow.

If you’re OK with that faustian bargain then stop reading this post.

No, I mean it. Stop!

Still reading? Good. Then like me, you like to grow and to learn. To do that, you must stretch yourself. That’s what learning and growing is all about. And what you need to know about stretching is that it hurts. Now I’m not talking about excruciating pain. Just like with stretching as part of physical exercise, if you stretch too much you’ll pull something. And that’s stupid. But still, it’s supposed to hurt a little.

If it doesn’t hurt a bit, if it doesn’t make you uncomfortable then you weren’t learning or growing. So stretch more.
