Romantic innovation

April 24, 2011

At the heart of every innovator, lies a romantic. Innovation is about imagining a world that operates very differently from the one that exists today, and then breaking the “rules” that maintain the current order. To innovate, you have to deeply accept that regardless of what the data say, it can be done. No, I don’t mean data don’t matter. I mean that there will always be data that suggest your innovation can’t possibly work. If you’re going to be ruled by data, you will never innovate. You have to trust in your heart that it can be done, the same way you would trust in your heart that the man or woman you love will bring you a life of joy – even if there is a datum that suggests otherwise. And then you have to go all in. With all your heart, with all your soul, with all your energy.
